History of the Sports Hall of Memories
The
Sports Hall of Memories was established in 1979
to collect, preserve and exhibit memorabilia that
describes the rich sports heritage of Trail and
to honour those individuals who have made a significant
contribution to sport in our City.
Our Location
The exhibit is located on the Red
Floor of the Trail Memorial Centre adjacent the
Trail and District Public Library.
Hall Exhibits
The Sports Hall of Memories initially
comprised 8 display cabinets, however as the collection
grew 14 more cabinets were added.
The
cabinets contain photos, trophies, uniforms, and
other memorabilia representing hockey, baseball,
softball, curling, track and field, lacrosse and
other local sports. One display honours those
individuals that have played or coached in the
NHL or the WHA and another honours those who have
been inducted into the BC Sports Hall of Fame
from Trail or other prestigious awards for their
contribution to sport in Trail and in British
Columbia.
The
exhibit has a companion kiosk containing an electronic
database which expands on the contents of the
display cases and describes the history of sports
in Trail using a touch screen to navigate through
the pages. The kiosk contains archival film footage
of the return of the 1938 Trail Smoke Eaters to
Trail after capturing the Allan Cup in Calgary
and of the final game of the 1961 World Hockey
Championships when the Smokies won their second
World Title. The kiosk also contains the biographies
and a photo of those who have been honoured on
the Home of Champions Monument in downtown Trail.
